European Journalism Institute Summer School (9-17.07.2011, Czech Republic) - 09.02.2025
Though culture and customs dictate differences in journalism from country to country, at the heart of professional, responsible journalism rests a similar set of principles and practices. In emerging democracies and those long-established, journalism serves to build communities, to encourage citizenship, to give voice to the voiceless, to foster democracy. Weigh those lofty aspirations against the harsher reality that journalism is a business. Because it is a business, many claim that it is less independent and less courageous than it needs to be to truly serve its readers, its viewers, its listeners. Each summer for a full week in July, about four dozen practicing journalists, student journalists and those drawn toward critical examination of the intricacies of the free press gather in Prague for the European Journalism Institute, a seven-day intensive program of seminars, lectures and discussions about journalism and its role, its power, its responsibilities.
Come join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity this summer!
What is Rolling Admissions?
Rolling Admissions means that your application will be reviewed as soon as your application is completed. The earlier you apply, the more likely your application will be accepted. If you wait to apply until or near the application deadline, your application may not be accepted because of space limitations. With rolling admissions, it is possible that admissions for some countries will be suspended before the final application deadline. The EJI 2011 deadline is April 15, 2011.
Most often, a final decision will be made once an application is reviewed. If a decision cannot be made, it will be placed on hold.
What are the eligibility requirements for the participants?
The admissions committee targets working journalists throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the US, though journalists from other regions can apply. We will also select a few graduate and undergraduate university students who are concentrating their degree in journalism studies throughout Europe and the United States.
How many participants of each nationality will be accepted?
Every year the admissions committee establishes a target number of participants by country, and according to the average number of applications we typically receive proportional to the distribution of nations in the Institute.
Why was my application declined?
There can be a variety of reasons why your application was not accepted. The application process is very competitive; therefore, we look at a number of factors that contribute to our decision, and we are often forced to decline a large number of successful participants.
