Bilingual Rock [0] - 29.04.2024

On June 12th a youth international meeting called “Bilingual Rock” will take place. An unofficial motto is “Youth of the Two Countries shall unite!” Residents of Ulyanovsk will get a performance of a skate punk band from Germany as a gift to the City Day.

To tell the truth, there wasn’t such an event since the day of establishment of the Ulyanovsk Region on January 19th, 1943.
All that has happened thanks to Birte Palder, cultural manager of the Robert Bosch Foundation. Since 2009 she has been promoting intercultural exchange between her native country and Ulyanovsk Region.
Together with the German youth club called “Seven Winds”, comprised in the regional German National Cultural Autonomy, Birte will hold a number of meetings with the the Show off Freaks band from Brandenburg (July 9 – July 14).

The Ulyanovsk Region will celebrate its birthday with panache but in German traditions.
All the 2009 year round the cultural life is dedicated to the Year of Germany. In September the International Festival of German Culture will take place.

The guys will come to Russia for the first time. “They need to see the life in Russian provinces!” – Birte exclaims. “They want to perform more, that’s why performances in the settlements of the Volga Germans will take place – in Bogdashkino and Octyabrskoye villages as well as in Ulyanovsk. Except the main event on the City Day, the Show off Freaks will perform in the local club called “Prague” together with a NeFreeT band from Ulyanovsk.

These guys: Tony Illing, Stefan “Schreibi” Schreiber and Robert “Laabsi” Laabs always have a thing to say. Their motto is: “No rose-colored glasses!” Since summer 2009 this trio has been performing in Russia. A year after their first Mini EP (2006 year) their first album was released. Even in the meantime the guys hadn’t been wasting time: they had given more than 200 concerts from Kiel (in the northern Germany) to Switzerland. They had reached new heights and recorded many songs. They were talking about making a new album (January – March 2010), which would contain revolutionary ideas of skate-punk. This album was released under the name “Die Welt auf Standby” (“the world on standby”) and its publication scheduled for midyear 2010.

“The Show off Freaks has some songs devoted to social problems”, – the drummer of NeFreeT says. “And we have some humorous- and, at the same time, social-themed songs. We have also songs about our city, our state of mind. We are singing about our feelings, relationships with people”. Ulyanovsk rockers established their band in December 2008. The musical trio (drums - Alexey Degtyarev, bass guitar - Alexei Vikleyn, vocals and electric guitar - Pavel Vikleyn) has different kinds of songs: heavy songs and dance rhythms. In these latter days they do Indie rock that influences their creativity. We can say the band of these guys is a multicultural band, because they are representatives of Russian Germans. “It will be interesting to hear the band live, to know how they live, and, of course, we want to perform together.” - the musicians from NeFreeT say in anticipation of their joint performance with the Show off Freaks.

An extensive cultural program has also been planned. “We want the guys from Germany to meet local youth organizations and to communicate with them in the future. The main purpose is to continue this intercultural exchange, to make it long-lasting. We want to carry on our cooperation or even to have friendship.” – Birte Palder says.
