Towards the British Culture [0] - 23.01.2025

The British are said to be starchy and prim. Are they? The British culture seems to be all convention and tradition. Is it?

During the Olympiads "Towards the British Culture” arranged at the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics on March, 17th, the participants turned all the notions of the British culture upside down and inside out. They tried to discover the unknown face of the British culture while learning to use their imagination to create tremendous presentations in English.

The spectators had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves into twelve fascinating stories told with humour and solemnity, with ardour and shimmering eyes. The British culture uncovered its numerous sides with musical delights and peculiar celebrations, with surprising language details and literature finds. When seeing such diversity and experiencing the variety of the British actuals – if we can put it in this way – one can really feel like going to Britain and… just imagine: even the British holidays were simply looming on the horizon for all the participants!

Surely, such a colourful event could not have happened without efficient organizers and great preliminary work. The competition had 3 steps, completed only by 18 participants out of 1070, and the organizers provided information and prizes as very nice bonuses on their part. In this way they may say something like "noblesse oblige” – and it will be perfectly fair, as their names are Macmillan Publishing House and the British Council.

These organizations deserve our meticulous attention as they are among those which help our development and which – who knows – may become our career opportunities as well.

Macmillan Publishing House is one of the oldest in Britain, founded by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan in 1843. The Macmillan Group has offices in 41 countries worldwide and operates in more than 30 others. The Publishing House provides access to the latest linguistic learning aids, together with the feedback and free materials available on the official site http://www.macmillan.ru

The British Council proclaims itself the organization highlighting your way towards education, cultural awareness of norms, world values and the power of art. The British Council has several functions implemented even by the means of ads, though this word may sound irritating for the 21st century’s consumer. Education in the UK according to the British Council is innovative, individual and inspirational – and why not? Their work may be considered an extremely good PR-campaign, but whatever it may look like, it is still extremely good.

That’s why the British Council provided the first prize – a visit to Britain – to the winner of the "Towards the British Culture” competition. The lucky name to get the prize was Anastasia Shekhovtsova, the student at the Plekhanov Academy.

And there was even a bit of a pleasant surprise then: the second place was taken by Karina Levina, the student at Ulyanovsk State University. To tell you the truth, it is a great achievement at the interregional level: Karina got a subscription to an English FCE course on-line, but what is more, her victory can’t leave us indifferent and uninspired. It proves that our goals are just victories-to-be.
Our Warmest Congratulations on Karina's Victory!!!

Though you may find it difficult travelling to Moscow, the "Towards the British Culture” competition had its first steps as an Internet-based Olympiads, and the last tour could be completed by sending a video presentation to the organizers.

That’s why even if you live in a pretty remote region, Britain can become closer than you dare think.
