IQ and EQ Tests: a catch question [1] - 15.07.2025
Let’s watch one scene: two students are taking an exam. One of them got the material down pat, but is nervous and afraid of failure. The second one perceives the situation from the philosophical point of view, knows the most essential questions and topics and hopes for the best. The first student, when answering the professor’s questions cannot control his emotions and suddenly confuses expressions and speaks with a faltering tongue. The second student, yet knowing not so much, operates with what he can, creating a confident and coherent answer.As a rule, examiners pay little attention to circumstances and see the result in general. And for our two students this result can be confusing and conflicting. In any way, we should remember the words of Rudyard Kipling: "We have forty million reasons for failure, but not a single excuse”.
A catch question
Some educators and psychologists feel that neither EQ nor IQ testing presents the full picture of a human being. This does not, however, discourage employers from using emotional and intellectual quotient tests to make decisions regarding candidates for jobs in their companies.
Here is an opinion poll which shows that students of our university have their own position about the system of tests in general:
1) Do you think the result of an IQ test is the real proof of intellectual abilities?
o 91% - NO;
• 9% - YES;
2) Is any system of tests just to the full extent?
o 60% - NO;
• 40% - YES;
3) Would you rather take a test instead of a conversation?
o 78% - NO;
• 22% - YES;
4) Are you lucky in tests?
o 12,6% - NO;
• 87,4% - YES;
5) Do you think a person’s success depends on the IQ level?
o 94,5% - NO;
• 5,5% - YES;
6) Are you usually disappointed by the results of a test, (psychological or educational)?
o 83% - NO;
• 17% - YES;
7) Is the State Exam necessary in our country?
o 100% - NO;
• 0% - YES;
8) Do you think a test can be the grounds on giving an applicant the job?
o 96,8% - NO;
• 3,2% - YES;
9) Do you often agree with the results of some tests from the Internet, magazines, etc.?
o 25% - NO;
• 75% - YES;
Some of the answers are contradictory, but this test is not an exception: it gives the whole picture and very few details. But it is the common opinion about the State Exam, which is especially notable. In fact, it is only a test that doesn’t improve our abilities, adds very little to our knowledge and only makes us solve all the problems by sample.
However, I hope, we all understand that knowledge is measured not only by points in tests and both intellectual and emotional abilities can be improved by every means. Our personality is always the sum of virtues which we can develop and remember: Don't do whatever you like -- like whatever you do.
