Alice in Wonderland, which became Underland [0] - 22.01.2025
We waited for it for too long and eventually got a chance to watch new Burton`s piece of art. Could you imagine that Alice`s journey into Wonderland was not the last one? According to Tim Burton, she got another chance to visit this place of a dream, but it turned out to be Underland instead of Wonderland.
Characters are as mad as they are described in the book. White Rabbit is in hurry all the time, he works for the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and is a member of the Underland Underground Resistance at the same time. Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) is obsessed with Mad Hatter`s hat. The Red Queen is eager to put heads of shoulders. The White Queen (Anne Hathaway) is crazy about animals` rights. Real fun make Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas). It is such a pleasure to watch them, you can`t stop laughing at these characters (may be the actor famous for the television show Little Britain (Russian analogue is Наша Раша) is such a talented comedy perfomer, who knows).
Actually, Tim Burton`s fans could be disappointed. Disney TM affected much on the plot and atmosphere. There is strict distinction between “good” and “bad” characters, clear morality, main characters`s understanding of his or her importance and etc. If you have seen such cartoons as Cinderella, Snowhite or Beauty and the Beast by Disney TM you could easily catch the idea and even some points of the plot of this film as well.
But the director is not as ordinary to follow the company`s restrictions. His White Queen is pathetic; she is too obsessed with animals`rights and the stuff like that. Alice asks the most important question of the film (which you, actually, start asking from the beginning): “Why don`t you kill Jabberwock by yourself”, − and gets quite a vague answer. Since this moment you start not, may be, hating, but, surely, disliking the White Queen. The Red Queen is not a clear character as well. Probably, she has some complex indicator as she can not stand her younger sister due to her smartness. The Red Queen decided to be a complete opposite of her sister, who is loved by everybody. She set a state of fear and thus realizes all her dreams. At the end you even sympathize her when the White Queen sentenced her to deportation and her lover tried to kill her. This moment is devoted to the character of Helena Bonham Carter as Anne Hathaway`s one seems to be unfair in some way.
One more point of any film is music. A month or so earlier Almost Alice was said to be released before the film with songs inspired by the film. There are 16 tracks there and stylistically they differ much from each other. But, unfortunately none of the songs is included into the film. You could only listen to Avril Lanigne`s Alice while captions are on. That` s a pity as Almost Alice will, certainly, bring some interesting points into the film and keep attention more than characters` discussions what to do next or their monologues which sometimes are quite boring.
Since the very start of work this film was covered with rumors, but this made good advertisement. However, Tim Burton seems not to give any important and significant information about his work. Nevertheless on the premiere in London there were discovered some interesting points. Firstly, voices of such characters as Blue Caterpillar, for instance, were recorded in London and actors were accompanied only by Tim himself. As Michael Sheen (White Rabbit) told to Absolute Radio he did not meet Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter). Neither did so Alan Rickman (Blue Caterpillar). Unfortunately, the Russians do not have an opportunity to listen to their voices.
