Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences - 02.02.2025
The “Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences – Linking Theory and Empirical Research” seeks to promote young researchers by strengthening their methodological understanding in linking theory and empirical research. Program:
In the first week, the summer school’s curriculum is centered around three key methodological challenges:
“Concepts as Building Blocks of Theories”, “Linking Micro- and Macro Perspectives”, and “Causation in the Social Sciences”.
In the second week, we will break out into four groups that focus on the following thematic areas: “Democracy and Democratization”, “Social Inequality”, “Civil Society”, and “Politics, Economy, and Society in a Globalizing World”. How do selected studies in these empirical fields deal with the questions, pitfalls, and caveats of the issues identified in the first week? Furthermore, the sessions in the second week seek to provide hands-on research advice. Participants are also able to present their own work and approches to dealing with these issues.
The Berlin Summer School is open to thirty international PhD candidates. Due to generous funding provided by the WZB and the BGSS, there will be no tuition fees.
Upon successful completion of a seminar paper (20-25 pages) addressing a key methodological challenge in one’s own work, participants will be granted 5 ECTS credit points.
Who can apply?
The summer school is designed for PhD candidates who have already begun planning their doctoral projects in detail or are currently working on them. All applicants should already be enrolled in the PhD studies and should be pursuing doctoral dissertations that take the themes of the Berlin Summer School into consideration. For applicants in 5-year doctoral programs, we would generally recommend applying no earlier than the 2nd year of studies.
Selection Criteria:
We will select thirty international participants based on academic achievement and motivation as reflected in a CV and motivation statement.
In addition, we will seek a balance between the thematic areas covered in week 2, countries of origin, and gender.
How to apply?
Please fill out the application form online (including a CV, motivation statement of 500 words or fewer, and a short project abstract)
