The Leiden University Faculty of Humanities invites applications for
a

FULL PRO­FES­SOR­SHIP in Modern Russia Studies .
vacancy number: 10-043

This chair will be installed for a period of five years, with the
intention of converting this to a structural position once its
success has been proven.

The successful candidate will be able to bring to the FacultyTMs
research and teaching his or her internationally recognised expertise
on contemporary Russian society, in particular the countryTMs internal
political system and its external political relations with former
Soviet states, the European Union and other world powers. As this
position is an integral part of the Faculty of Humanities, it is
assumed that this field of expertise can be researched and taught
using primary Russian-language sources.

The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of modern Russian
society in a multidisciplinary scholarly perspective, combining
tradition and modernity and expressly including RussiaTMs conduct in
the international arena. The holder of this chair is able to
propagate this field of expertise in the form of excellent research
and teaching for international academics and students who specialise
in the field of Russian studies. He or she will also have the
necessary competences to communicate broader knowledge of modern
Russian society (contemporary historic, socio-economic and
constitutional developments) independent of language, within broader
teaching programmes, specifically in the field of (comparative)
regional studies.

The successful candidate should have the ability to play an active
part in the UniversityTMs research profile area on the ~Global
interaction of people, culture and power through the ages.TM
Specialist knowledge of Russian in a broader Eurasian perspective
will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be a team player within the Faculty
community, in particular within the Institute for History and the
different regional studies, and should be able and willing to make a
contribution to knowledge transfer on Russia based on direct access
to primary sources for the benefit of the societal and political
debate in the Netherlands.

The successful candidate will, in terms of content and structure, be
prepared and able to further develop the initiative taken in 2008 for
a joint international MA programme in Russian Studies with the
Catholic University of Leuven (specialisation in East European
Studies within the MA programme on Comparative and International
Politics, Faculty of Social Sciences) and, the
administrative/management context permitting, to expand the
initiative into a joint degree programme. In a future phase, the
holder of the chair will also be required to involve the European
University in Saint Petersburg (EUSP) in the programme. With effect
from 2010, EUSP is the new partner institution that offers the
compulsory semester abroad for Leiden BA students of Russian Studies
and Slavic Languages and Cultures. The successful candidate should
therefore be capable of setting up an international Leiden-Leuven-
Petersburg study programme of 90 EC.

Leiden University

Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities consists of the Institutes for Area
Studies, Creative & Performing Arts, Cultural Disciplines, History,
Linguistics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. It has about 4,500
students and 1,000 staff. Staff and students come from all over the
world. The faculty offers 31 three-year BA programmes and 45 MA
programmes. The majority of the MA programmes are taught in English.
The faculty has a Graduate School with an annual output of about 50
PhDs. Faculty researchers are involved in several of the UniversityTMs
key research areas: Asian Modernities and Traditions; Global
Interaction of People, Culture and Power through the Ages; Language
Diversity in the World; Political Legitimacy: Institutions and
Identities; and Brain Function and Dysfunction over the Lifespan.

Institute for History

The Institute for History is one of the seven institutes of the
Faculty of Humanities. It is responsible for an important part of the
historical research practiced at Leiden University. The InstituteTMs
research focuses on the following five themeTMs: The Unification of
the Mediterranean World; The Dynamics of European Identity, 1300-
1700; Political Culture and National Identity; European Expansion and
Globalisation; Managing migration and global interdependence. As well
as the permanent and temporary teaching staff, the Institute has a
population of some 40 research masterTMs students and 25 research

Duties

*

Developing and teaching BA, MA and PhD programmes, employing
the different academic modes of instruction, both in (Russian)
language-dependent and language-independent variants;
*

Conducting research in the field of Russian Studies and
supervising research groups;
*

Acquiring funding, including from international sources (via
both indirect government funding and third party contracts), for
research programmes, and supervising these programmes;
*

Initiating, stimulating and supervising PhD research
undertaken by research candidates and external PhD researchers;
*

Fulfilling management responsibilities relating to the
Russian Studies programme, the International Studies programme and
other programmes, and on behalf of the Institute for History, the
Faculty of Humanities and national and international partnerships;
*

Defining the content and structure of a joint international
Leiden-Leuven-Petersburg MA Programme in Russian Studies with the
Catholic University Leuven, and developing this collaboration into a
joint degree programme.
*

Contributing to the societal relevance of the UniversityTMs
activities, in particular with regard to knowledge transfer on Russia
for the societal and political debate in the Netherlands.

Qualifications

The professor to be appointed will be the holder of a doctorate.
The successful candidate will have:

*

Excellent active and passive command of the Russian
language;
*

Excellent teaching skills, as well as broad experience in
providing academic teaching, employing different modes of
instruction;
*

Excellent research capabilities in the field of the teaching
and research assignment, as will be evidenced by an extensive
publication list " both national and international " including
works that have been published by respected publishing houses or that
have appeared in leading journals;
*

Broad experience and excellent capabilities in recruiting
and supervising PhD candidates;
*

Proven ability to acquire funds for research programmes
nationally and internationally (indirect government funding and
funding from third party contracts);
*

Proven organisational, administrative and management skills
in the field of teaching and research and at both departmental and
Faculty level;
*

The ability to successfully realise complex national and
international partnerships;
*

Excellent written and spoken command of English. In the
event the professor to be appointed is not a Dutch speaker, he or she
will be expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years,
and to teach in the UniversityTMs BA programmes in Dutch.

Candidates will be expected to give a trial lecture as part of
the interview procedure. A management assessment may be a part of the
procedure.

Gross salary range: from ¬ 4904 to ¬ 7142 per month, depending
on qualifications. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be
eligible for a substantial tax break.
